New Ku-band Dish
« on: August 06, 2017, 08:59 am »
Yesterday I bought a new 1.2-metre band dish from Dr. Sat. True FTA is not a lucrative business nowadays obviously. But at least he was able to allow me to physically visit his store and sell on-the-spot a new dish. This is more than the other local store in the Toronto area allows: it only does business via online purchases and advertises in US$ as well!

I've always wanted a 1.2-metre Ku-band dish so now I'm like a kid in a candy store with my new toy. I have work to do!

I look forward to your posts about your reception results. I am curious about what you are able to receive.

Maybe I am miss configured as I seem to have better results on the C-Band then the KU.

If you are able to receive C-band, you will get many more stations than on Ku-band. Yesterday, I temporarily installed my Ku dish and was able to receive several satellites. The most interesting are 87W and 103W since they have PBS and NBC stations. Signals were strong on this new dish with consistent 70+% quality.

Today I confirmed I was able to receive Ku satellites at 30W (Hispasat), 87W (PBS channels on LPB), 91W, 95W (CCTV), 97 W (hundreds of channels) and 103W (NBC channels, Cozi). But the Ku band does not have nearly as much as C band. For this reason, I will now study how to add a C-band LNB to allow me to get at least some of the strongest C-band channels.

What LNB are you using? I have a BSC621 dual band and I can only get DVB S. Maybe I need to go outside and fiddle with my placement. I had given up on receiving any DVB-S2 signals.

Do whatever you need to do to get DVB-S2 on Ku. This is essential. You are missing the good stuff. For example, LPB (PBS from Louisiana) uses DVB-S2 on 87W. My little GeosatPRO microHD receives DVB-S2 well. It is not for sale new any longer but there are other receivers.

I am using a low-cost LNB that is universal (9750 / 10600 MHz LO) and a single output. As soon as I can get to my home in Nova Scotia, I will bring back my collection of LNBs. I have circular, PLL types, universal, standard from previous times that I can bring to Ontario.

I now have this dish installed in Halifax. I am considering again equipping it with a C-band LNB and conical scalar ring just to see what it can do on C-band.
